Setting up your roster, lineup, and formation

Set up your team roster, lineup, and formation to get the most out of Veo. Assigning jersey numbers and saving a default lineup saves time before every match; and if you have Analytics 2, it also links player names to their performance data automatically.

Requirements

  • Available only for Football (Soccer)
  • A Veo team with coach or admin access
  • Players invited to the team
  • The match lineup is visible to all team members and club admins, and editable by Team Admins and Team Editors
  • The default lineup is only visible and editable to Team Admins and Team Editors

Add players and assign jersey numbers

Jersey numbers connect players to their data across the Veo platform. We recommend assigning them at the start of the season, assuming numbers don't change match to match.

  1. Go to your team page and open the Members tab
  2. Make sure all players are invited to the team
  3. Assign a jersey number to each player
  4. Optionally, assign a captain — this will be pre-filled in every match lineup

Tip: If you have Analytics 2, keeping jersey numbers accurate is essential. It's how player names get linked to their stats in Analytics Studio, the Editor, and the Veo app.

Important: Roster changes only apply to matches going forward. If you assign jersey numbers after a match has already been recorded, those numbers won't appear in that historical match. To update a past match, open it in the Editor and update the lineup there.

Set a default lineup

A default lineup is automatically copied to every new match, so you don't have to start from scratch each time. It's ideal for teams with a consistent starting XI.

Only Team Admins and Team Editors can create, edit or view the default lineup. Once it's copied into a match, everyone who can see that match's lineup can see it there.

  1. Go to your team page and open the Lineup tab
  2. Select your formation and add your starting players
  3. Save the lineup as your default

Before each match, review the pre-filled lineup, add substitutes, and make any match-specific adjustments.

Note: Changing the formation in a match lineup clears all players, so you'll need to add them again. You can always switch back to your default lineup and your players will be filled in automatically. Editing your default lineup without changing the formation keeps your saved players in place — no need to start over.

Assign Team Captain and Player of the Match

You can highlight key players by assigning two special roles: Team Captain and Player of the Match. In the lineup, scroll below your formation to find these options.

Note: You can remove the team captain from a specific match without changing the captain saved at the team level. Your team-level captain stays the same for future matches.

View a player's Focus Card from the lineup

In the Editor, you can open a detailed performance card for any player directly from the match lineup, without leaving the video.

  1. Open a match in the Editor
  2. Click the Lineup icon in the right-side panel. This opens the lineup view showing your team, formation, and all players in their positions
  3. Click any player in the lineup to open their Focus Card. You'll see their name, jersey number, and position at the top

Note: Full stats, physical data, and maps in the Focus Card are available with Analytics 2.

    2. Physical: AI-tracked physical performance, including distance, sprints, top speed, and average speed
    3. Maps: a position heat map and shot map for this player. Use the Heat map interval slider to filter by time period, for example, first half vs second half
  5. Close the Focus Card with the button and tap a different player in the lineup to compare

FAQs

Can I update stats from a past match if I forgot to assign jersey numbers?

Yes — open the match in the Editor and update the lineup there. Roster changes made in team settings only apply going forward, but the Editor lets you correct historical match data manually.

What happens if I change the formation in a match lineup?

Changing the formation clears all players from the lineup. You'll need to re-add them. If you only need to swap players without changing the formation, the rest of the lineup is preserved.

Can players assign their own jersey number?

Yes — players can claim a jersey number in the Veo app at the match level. This works even if the coach hasn't set up a roster. Coaches can always override this if needed.

If I remove the captain for one match, does it change my team's captain?

No — removing the captain for a specific match only affects that match. The captain saved at the team level stays the same and will still be pre-filled in your next match.

Who can see the default lineup?

Only Team Admins and Team Editors can create, edit or view the default lineup. Once it's copied into a match, it becomes part of that match's lineup, so anyone who can see the match lineup can see it there.

Is the lineup feature available for all sports?

No — this feature is currently available for Football (Soccer) only.

Does Veo automatically detect substitutions?

Not yet — substitutions must be managed manually.

Can I create a custom formation?

You can't create a custom formation; you can choose from a variety of predefined formations available in the list.
